1. LIVING IN INTERESTING TIMES

“May you live in interesting times.” So goes a proverb, or a curse, of unknown origin. Indeed we do live in interesting times as economic woes, environmental crisis, wars, political instability, eroding civil rights and disasters, both natural and human-made, fill the headlines and impact private lives in ways we’d not imagined just a few years ago.

Times of turmoil and difficult lives test the human spirit. Some crumble under the weight of stress and circumstances, resorting to hopelessness, thoughtlessness and event cruelty. Yet others rise against the tide of grim news to bring hope, justice and joy – whether in big action or tiny gestures.

This past month San Franciscans witnessed (and still witnessing) the elation and euphoria of marriage equality, showing that there is at least still some forward progress in the area of civil rights. That was a big positive step among the gloom and doom. At an impromptu rally at the San Francisco City Hall a man handed out roses to strangers, even as bigots spewed words of hate at any passer by. In truth, the Rose Man was handing out fragrant symbols of hope. It’s amazing what a single blossom can do to light up the world with smiles.

Lately I’ve noticed small acts of heroism and kindness making a difference in the world around us. Friends are calling friends to check on the wellbeing of their hearts. Strangers helping in evacuations and disaster relief. Volunteerism, such as AIDS LifeCycle, and volun-tourism, both domestic and international, getting increasing attention. Previously politically disinterested or disenfranchised individuals’ taking up causes and issues with passion and fervor.

So as a sex educator, I turn my thoughts to how the dialogue and art of eroticism and intimacy may help bring more hope, kindness and joy to this over stressed world. Another adage, not so old, of “make love, not war” could use a dusting-off. Or how about “passionate lovers leave no carbon footprints”?

Wishing you peace, pleasure and joy!

Lola Jake - Again.

For those guys here who have purchased a Lola-Jake, how long did it take you to receive your item?  Did you receive any communication from them at all regarding your order?  It's been 31 business days since I placed my order and their website says 21 days max for delivery.  The only email I've received from them was a receipt for payment.  Otherwise all communication has been initiated by me.  I was told it would ship a week ago Monday, and when it didn't arrive I was told it would ship last friday and would take 3 days.  And here it is 4 business days later (nearly a week) and NO ITEM.  I inquired yesterday and have yet to receive any tracking number.

Yes I'm a bit impatient but I also feel I forked over good money ($600) and deserve a little bit more communication.  Is this normal for them?

Getting frustrated.

I can't believe no one posted it here
If they did, I missed it and I apologize.

But for those who didn't know, Dragoncon past and present Guest George Takei is now engaged to be married The California Supreme Court has ruled that all Californians have a fundamental right to marry the person he or she loves

From Damon Romine, Entertainment Media Director, GLAAD:
"Actor George Takei, 71, and Brad Altman, 54, were the first couple to ever receive their marriage license in the City of West Hollywood. Takei and Altman will have a wedding ceremony in September in the Democracy Room of the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles.
The couple have been together for 21 years and were invited to be part of the ribbon-cutting ceremony inviting the couples into West Hollywood Park to receive their license. Many couples even went on to have wedding services performed in the park under wedding gazebos, surrounded by music, flowers and passed decorated cupcakes."

I, for one, will be bringing George and Brad a gravy boat at Dragoncon ;)

Taking the Edge off the Cranky
Dear Writer,

To say that I am intimidated to be editing your work does not even begin to sum up the situation. You are a Very High Profile writer, and I am a twenty-something kid, and yours is the first book I have been primary editor on--which you know. You are also famous and a big enough deal that you could get away with being an absolute terror.

All of this makes it all the more gratifying that you are kind, respectful, wonderfully easy to work with, terrifically responsive to feedback, mindful of deadlines, and generally a pleasure to work with. Thank you for making this editor a little less cranky.

You're pretty awesome.

Love,
Me

Chest problems due to binding?

I looked through the tags and couldn't find anything that really helped me out.

I've been binding for a while now and because of job problems I use control top panty hose instead of a binder since it's way cheaper.  I've never had a problem with it before until now.  I had a doctors appointment today because my ribs have been hurting really badly.  So the doctor took some xrays and stuff and said that I basically bent my ribs.  (His words were "realigned several of my ribs".)  Has anyone else had this problem?  I'm afraid I'm going to do more damage if I continue to bind but there's no way to pass if I don't.  (I have a larger chest.)  Any suggestions on how to bind without hurting anything?

Thanks in advance,
Aiden

I was reading a history when I came across this:

The Wesleyan Missionary in 1838, at Mangungu, was under John Hobbs with his wife and daughter, Emma

May I say this is ever so wrong! I mean, his wife and daughter?

Amusing
Girls by Design: This is a Blog » Blog Archive » 7 Words!

To quote:

"Use all of the following seven words to construct a poem, short story, or prose:"

you can all go to the site to see what those 7 words are. My bit of prose:

--

My sense of proprioception was lying to me again, telling me i was adrift in a warm sea with a hazy fog, when really i was recumbent on my bed. I'd grown used to this romantic hallucination, an attempt by my mind to deceive me as to the mundane nature of my existence. A cranial lie, an indignant lashing out; creating a juicy, rich, succulent reality out of the boring events of my life. I didn't listen to it; i didn't let myself fall into the dream, and i scorned it with much ridicule.

--

Most Amusing. While i'm sure 29 year old men were not their target audience, it is a good writing exercise.
